Some people go through life weak, accept they are weak and in the latter part of their lives spend most of their time and effort dealing with illness. A lot of these people started life not athletic and physically weak. Is it just their plight and is it just what hand they were dealt in life?

On the other hand you see people who were always physically strong. They seem to enjoy good health right to the end. At old age they seem to be still active and spending time and effort doing the things they want instead of endless doctor/hospital appointments. What is the secret?

‘Without your health you might as well have nothing.’

The real fact is those who are long term physically active will always do better. Here I can hear people say things like ‘well if my health was better I would have done more physically’, or ‘now that my health is already bad then there is no turning back’, ‘I’m too busy to commit some time to health’

Then in choosing a physical activity the first thought very often is to go to the gym – and very often have your brain is numbed by boredom. Then motivation becomes a big problem. You hear ‘gym’ but your reaction is not of enthusiasm and glee!

How about an activity that has helped millions of people over thousands of years! – because Kung Fu is arguably the best long term answer for young AND old…

FOUR BIG BIG ADVANTAGES:

1.. The art of Kung Fu is totally fascinating. It has a brilliant long history filled with heroes and legends. There is also always a lot of stuff in the media both current and past. Why not start by watching say the film ‘Ip Man’ (totally awesome film!)? Then there is Bruce Lee – who is the original icon of the martial arts and represents Kung Fu. He’s the biggest and most important icon/legend of them all.

 

For MAXIMUM long term benefit it is about the LONG TERM CONSISTENCY that gives you the good health and fitness. THE SECRET to achieving this is in the interest! Many people go to the gym and within  a month or two they are bored to tears – they simply give up!

-Here You will be very unlikely to be bored! (Especially when your friend throws a punch at you and you have to deal with it!)

2.. Some combat martial arts are only suited to the young athletic adults -  in fact some classes you go to the age range is very narrow – typically 18 to 30. People over 30 tend to struggle. Typical of these are the boxing, kickboxing, MMA type of class.

With Kung Fu you won’t have that problem…

There is something for the very young right to old age (starting at just 5 years old to the day you die!!!!) and everyone in between of course.

A lot of it concentrates on technique and skills and with pure strength and stamina being only part of it. Therefore Kung Fu has practitioners middle aged and above and are comfortable with it. Some boast practitioners 60+ !  and they train with the young adults!

For kids there is the added benefits that he will learn some of the most important characteristics in life – Respect, Family values, Discipline, Structured Thinking, Self Confidence – very important characteristics I would say!

 

3..You have the added benefit of self-defence and not just fitness. Being a martial art Kung Fu deals with self-defence and often you have street scenario training – that is the situation is more realistic. How? Well Ok for example one of the scenarios:

You train with the situation whereby you are shoved against a wall with a knife at your throat. What do you do?

You just won’t get that if you go to a combat sports type because they do their stuff in a ring/cage with rules and a referee – no is looking to stab you with a knife.

Another example is training to fight multiple attackers. In the street often it is a mess and you and your opponents often have friends around. May there are two or three of them…

.

4.. Arguably the range of benefits far out-strips that of the normal gym. It works on your mind as well as your body. Kung Fu has always had a spiritual aspect. Central to it all is the set movements that are called ‘forms.’

Forms are sets of movements put together in a logical way and these forms often are famous and have been passed down the generations. They are the syllabus and carry the style’s techniques. What is interesting also is that often they include a spiritual side or breathing exercises. These help strengthen your state of mind – TRULY working on your inner self.

These are just four reasons/advantages but are big reasons to have a go. In my 46 years’ experience in the martial arts I’ve seen young and old practitioners and these people inspire me. I’ve seen the long term benefits they enjoy right to old age. I see old practitioners still in awe of the martial arts and still with a thirst to learn and staying young – A TRULY FULFILLING LIFE..
